Effects of steroid use on the liver

We found 16 eligible studies, mostly uncontrolled cohorts of varied follow-up durations (1471 male-to-female (MF) and 651 female-to-male (FM) individuals). In the MF individuals, cross-sex hormone use was associated with a statistically significant increase in fasting serum triglycerides without changes in the other parameters (WMD = mg/dl; 95% CI = -). In the FM individuals, there was a similar increase of triglycerides (WMD = mg/dl; 95% CI = -) and a reduction of high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (WMD = - mg/dl; 95% CI = - to -). There was a statistically significant but clinically trivial increase in systolic blood pressure (WMD = mmHg; 95% CI = -). Analyses were associated with significant heterogeneity across studies. There were very few reported cardiovascular events (deaths, strokes, myocardial infarctions or venous thromboembolism), more commonly among MF individuals.

Steroids can have long-lasting and sometimes irreversible side effects on the body. Anabolic steroids have been linked to increased cholesterol, stroke and blood clots, urinary and bowel problems, and problems with the musculoskeletal system. Since steroids are a hormone, much like testosterone, the effects on sex characteristics can be far reaching, causing a kind of hyper-masculinity in young men. They can also cause male-pattern baldness and shrinking of the testicles. The excess of testosterone can also have feminizing effects on young men, such as breast development. (Jerry Adler, 2004)

There are an unknown percentage of people that become addicted to steroids from abusing the drug. Steroid abusers tend to spend vast amounts of money and time to obtain this drug. This is an obvious indication of addiction to steroids. People who abuse this drug show signs of withdrawal symptoms as soon as they halt the usage. Some of the side effects of steroid abuse can be fatigue, decreased hunger, loss of sex drive, and craving more steroids. The worst effect being depression, which can lead to attempting suicide, if this symptom is not addressed the effect has been known to last over a year after stopping the usage.
